Division 1 Hurling League

The Senior Hurlers were unlucky to come away from Coolderry on Wednesday last without anything after a late goal from Coolderry saw them go on to win by 2-17 to 3-11. Some good performances around the field and a speedy recovery is wished to Pierce Gath who took a nasty knock to his ankle.

No Joy for Sash

The County Board has decided to throw out Eglish-Drumcullen’s appeal over the result of a senior hurling championship match against Lusmagh last month.

Eglish-Drumcullen objected to the result of their SHC against Lusmagh after referee Declan Cooke declared the match a draw, even though spectators from both sides felt that Eglish-Drumcullen had won by a point.

However, their appeal to the hearings committee failed and the referee’s report was upheld much to the annoyance of the Eglish-Drumcullen GAA club.

U10 Hurling Championship

The U10s played Coolderry in the Championship in Rath on Saturday last (31/05/08) and after a gallant performance were on the wrong side of a 6-06 to 5-01 defeat. The U10 panel is as follows: Henry Valentine, Sean Kinsella, Michael Horan, Martin Hynes, Conor Guilfoyle, Eoin Watkins, Kyle Quegan, Barry O'Meara, Ciaran Guinan, Stephen Hanrahan, Stephen Watkins, Eoin Gath, Cathal Dooley, Patrick Horan, Leah Gath, Jordan Beswick and Eoghan Barrett.

Division 3 Hurling League

The Junior Hurlers made it 4 wins from 5 in the Division 3 Hurling League with a hard fought 1-13 to 1-12 win over Tullamore in Tullamore on Friday last (30/05/08). After losing to the same opposition in the Championship on the previous Monday, this was a good chance to make up for the defeat and that they did. A second half goal from Ronan Quegan put 4 point between the teams with 10 minutes remaining, but Tullamore got a goal of their own with minutes remaining drawing level before a Ray Gath free made sure of a 1 point win.

Junior 'A' Hurling Championship

The Junior A team were defeated by Tullamore in Rath on Monday last (26/05/08). Aided by a strong first half wind we failed to make it count going in 2 points down at half time, and it wasn't helped by the fact that influential play maker David Spain missed 15 minutes with a nasty head wound. On the resumption Tullamore opened a 6 point lead which was clawed back in the dying moments to 2 points. The last attack saw the ball hand passed between 4 players across the Tullamore 21 yard line before the attack was eventually broke down and the final whistle sounded. Final score was 2-08 to Tullamore's 3-07. Nothing but wins against K/K, Shamrocks and Shinrone will be enough to continue our involvement in the championship.

U10

The U10s played St. Rynagh's in Banagher on Monday last (26/05/08) and came away with a 1 point win. This is their third win on the trot with previous victories over Kilcormac/Killoughey and CRC Gaels and things certainly seem to be looking bright at underage. They now face Coolderry on Saturday in the Championship. Congratulations and well done to all the panel: Henry Valentine, Sean Kinsella, Michael Horan, Martin Hynes, Conor Guilfoyle, Eoin Watkins, Kyle Quegan, Barry O'Meara, Ciaran Guinan, Stephen Hanrahan, Stephen Watkins, Eoin Gath, Cathal Dooley, Patrick Horan, Leah Gath, Jordan Beswick and Eoghan Barrett.

Division 3 Hurling League

The Juniors played Killavilla in Killavilla on Thursday last (22/05/08). Killavilla enjoyed a 3-4 point leading margin for the three quarters of the game, until a Damien Spain inspired flourish in the last quarter saw us go on to win by 2 points. Final score was 0-12 to Killavilla's 0-10.

Junior Football Practice

The footballers played St. Rynagh's in a practice match in Rath on Tuesday last (20/05/08). In a close and enjoyable game we came out on top by one point.

U12

Our School under 12 team had two great wins over the past week against Birr and Shinrone. Congratulations to all involved and especially Mr Jonathan Dunne NT.

U14

Our U14s recorded a good 6-05 to 3-04 win over Lusmagh in Rath on Monday last (19/05/08). Going in with a big half time lead, they took the foot off the pedal in the second half but still had enough to spare at the final whistle.

Senior Practice

The Senior's played Clonkill of Westmeath in a practice match in Clonkill on Monday last (19/05/08) and came away with a 1-15 to 1-12 win. The team that started was Shane Guinan, John Brophy, Pierce Gath, Martin Ryan, Joseph Troy, Harry Ryan, Stephen Ryan, Niall O'Leary, Alan Maher, Shane Molloy, Ray Gath, Ray Quegan, Mark Kennedy, James Dooley, Conor Gath.

Junior 'B' Hurling Championship

The Junior 'B' team played their second game of the championship on Sunday last (18/05/2008) against Coolderry. After a close opening first half, the flood gates opened in the second half as Coolderry ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-21 to 0-04. John Ryan played well in the goals. Joe Kelly and James Watkins did well in defense. Coolderry are way ahead of the other 4 teams in the group and this was again evident but even so a much improved performance will be needed in the next two games between Seir Kieran and Kinnitty to advance.

Senior Practice

The Senior's played Borrisokane of Tipperary in a practice match in Rath on Saturday last (10/05/08) and came out well on top.

Congratulations

Congratulations Paul Guinan and Smyth’s Sand & Gravel on their recent win in the Offaly All Clubs Draw.

Senior Practice

The Senior's played Liam Mellows of Galway in a practice match in Rath on Sunday last (04/05/08) and were narrowly defeated.

The late Willie Mitchell

It was with sadness and regret that Willie Mitchell was laid to rest on Tuesday last. He had captained the club to its first ever minor title in 1949 having won the previous three with Banagher. He went on to win seven senior hurling championships in 1950,'51, '52, '54, '57, '58 and 1960 as well as representing Offaly with great distinction. But above all he was a wonderful character and a true gentleman. Willie continued to be a great supporter of the club throughout his life and we will miss him greatly. Again, to his family and many friends, we convey our deepest sympathy. There was a representative guard of honour at his removal and a minutes silence was respectfully observed at all game during the weekend. Ar dheis De go raibh a Anam dilis.

Table Quiz

The Feile Committee will hold a fundraising quiz at Enroute on Friday, May 23rd. Your generous support would be appreciated.

Junior 'C' Football Championship

The club's only Football team got their campaign off to a good start with a 3-08 to 3-06 win over Kilclonfert. Down 6 points at separate occasions they clawed their way back into it with good work in the forwards from Pierce Gath and goals from Ray Gath, Danny Maher and John Cashin. Conor Gath and Niall O'Leary worked well in the half back line with Ger McIntyre doing well when introduced. David Spain commanded the midfield all through the game.

Eglish-Drumcullen G.A.A. Club considering appeal over point controversy

Eglish-Drumcullen G.A.A. Club are now certain to consider appealing the result of the Lusmagh game, and if there is sufficient evidence that the referee did indeed make a mistake, then it would appear that they would have a good chance of winning an appeal.
Previously, the score submitted by a referee was sacrosanct and could not be over turned in the board room.
But the advent of the Disputes Resolution Authority has changed the goal posts and last year they over turned a score in a club game after an appeal by a Wicklow club.

Junior 'B' Hurling Championship

The club's third hurling team put in a professional performance to see off Carrig/Riverstown in their first match in the Junior 'B' Championship. A powerful display by the full back line set the platform for this win with Padriag Watkins, Liam Molloy and Joseph Kelly all keeping their men scoreless. Mark Kennedy bundled the ball over the line for the first goal after good work from Sean T Guinan. Again it was Guinan who done all the ground work for the second goal which was driven to the net by Ray Colgan. The final score was 2-06 to Carrig/Riverstown's 0-09.

Junior 'A' Hurling Championship

An injury time point from Edenderry snatched a draw from Eglish/Drumcullen after they looked to have sealed a one point win. Down three points at half time Eglish/Drumcullen started the second half at a frantic pace and went into a five point lead with the goal from a lively Damien Spain. Edenderry crawled their way back into the game with some silly frees been given away, the fact that nine of Edenderry's scores came from frees tells it's own story. The game ended 1-12 a piece.

Senior Hurling Championship

It looked like the Seniors got the Championship off to the best possible start with a 2-10 to 0-15 win over Lusmagh but controversy surrounded at the final whistle when the Referee declared a 2-09 to 0-15 draw. Eglish/Drumcullen went in ahead 0-08 to 0-07 at half-time but then Lusmagh upped a gear after the break, but just when they looked like they were going to pull away up popped Ray Quegan with a goal. Again with 10 minutes left down three points, a free was awarded which Conor Gath duly finished to the net leaving it level (or so it seemed). With 3-4 minutes left, Danny Maher came in for Alan Maher and the first ball into his corner he picked it up turned his man and popped it over the bar. The resulting puck out ended the game and the controversy began.

Division 3 Hurling League

After two wins already in the Division 3 League the Juniors were defeated by Crinkle in Rath on Friday last by 4-13 to 4-08. Going in down 2-11 to 1-01 at half time they had an uphill battle in the second half. Battle they did and a strong finish nearly saw them snatch victory. Shane Molloy scored 3 goals and David Spain put in a fine performance after coming on after half-time.

U21 Hurling Championship Semi Final

Leinster League

The Seniors kept their interests alive in the Leinster League with a hard fought 3-10 to 3-08 win over Kiltale of Meath. They now need a win over Ringtown of Westmeath in their final game to stay involved.

Divison 1 and Division 3 Hurling League

Both teams were out on Sunday last. On noon on Sunday in Banagher the Seniors recorded a 0-15 to 1-06 win over St. Rynagh's while at 4PM in Rath the Juniors put back to back wins in the Division 3 League when they overcame a well drilled Killeigh team 2-07 to 0-10.

Refs' row over

Secretary of the Referees’ Committee, Carthage Buckley confirmed the decision by the Faithful County’s men-in-black:

"As a result of a referees’ meeting on Monday, March 10th, the Offaly referees have completed their protest at the decision to re-instate St. Mary’s in to the Under 21 Hurling Championship.

"Following a unanimous decision to return, the referees would like to thank the clubs of Offaly for their decision to stand down in support of one of their colleagues."

Refs’ row continues

The row between referees in Offaly and the Faithful County Board shows no sign of being settled with more scheduled games being effected by the impasse.

The dispute between the parties has escalated with a decision by the refs to withdraw their services from games next weekend, the second successive weekend of strike action by the refs.

Offaly Referees on Strike!!!!

As a result of the county boards decision to lift the two year ban on St Mary's participation in the U21 Hurling Championship, Offaly Referees are now on Strike and refusing to take charge of games.
